FAQ

Common questions about safety light curtain machine stop circuits, installation, and troubleshooting.

Can a safety light curtain directly stop a machine? +

Yes. The DRM-0840-R provides an isolated relay output with common, normally-closed and normally-open contacts. These contacts can switch the machine's control circuit directly, so no additional output interface is required.

The relay contacts are rated for ≤200 mA at DC 10–30 V. For higher safety integrity applications, a safety relay or safety controller can be inserted between the light curtain and the machine contactors.

How do I connect a safety light curtain to an emergency stop circuit? +

Connect the DRM relay contacts in series with the machine's emergency stop circuit or safety relay input. When a beam is interrupted, the relay changes state and the machine stops.

Verify the voltage and current rating of the e-stop circuit, confirm whether the normally-closed or normally-open contact is required, and ensure the final wiring follows the machine risk assessment and applicable safety standards.

Can a safety light curtain be used on an automated production line? +

Yes. Safety light curtains are widely used on automated production lines for machine access protection, operator safety, material presence detection and process monitoring.

The DRM-0840-R provides a 280 mm protection height with 8 beams at 40 mm pitch, suitable for medium-sized openings on production-line machines. Its relay output allows direct integration into line control systems.

Can a safety light curtain be used on a bending machine? +

Yes. Bending machines are a common application for safety light curtains. The light curtain monitors the operator access area and stops the machine when a hand or body part enters the hazardous zone.

The DRM-0840-R's relay output simplifies connection to the bending machine's control circuit. Safety distance and protection height should be determined according to the machine risk assessment and applicable safety standards.

What should I consider when installing a safety light curtain? +

Key installation considerations include: safety distance from the hazard, protection height covering the full opening, correct alignment between emitter and receiver, secure mounting to avoid vibration drift, and cable routing separated from high-voltage lines.

For the DRM-0840-R, use the standard side mounting or cantilever brackets, keep the emitter and receiver parallel, and verify the relay contact wiring before powering the machine.

What power supply does a safety light curtain require? +

The DRM-0840-R operates on a wide DC 10–30 V supply, with power consumption below 5 W. A regulated DC power supply or machine control power source is suitable.

The unit includes built-in protection against power over-voltage, reverse polarity, and output over-current. Before connection, confirm that the supply voltage and current are within the specified range.

What is the difference between detection distance and safety distance? +

Detection distance is the physical range between the emitter and receiver where the light curtain can reliably detect an object (0.1–3 m for the DRM-0840-R).

Safety distance is the minimum distance between the light curtain and the machine hazard required so the machine can stop before a person reaches the hazard. It is calculated from the machine stopping time, the light curtain response time, resolution and approach speed according to standards such as ISO 13855.

How do I protect a safety light curtain from environmental interference? +

The DRM Series has strong resistance to interference, with light interference resistance up to 10,000 Lux (incident angle > 5°). To further protect the light curtain:

Route signal cables away from high-power cables, use a stable power supply, avoid direct strong light sources pointed at the receiver, keep the lenses clean, and mount the units on rigid brackets to prevent vibration drift.

Why is my safety light curtain not working? +

If the light curtain does not turn on or does not switch output, check: power supply voltage and polarity, cable connections on the emitter and receiver, sync cable between the two units, and whether the lens is blocked or dirty.

For the DRM-0840-R, verify that the DC 10–30 V supply is within range, that the emitter and receiver are correctly aligned, and that the relay contact wiring matches the machine input. If the unit still fails, contact DAPPRA for support.

Why is my safety light curtain giving a false alarm? +

False alarms are usually caused by optical interference, misalignment, reflective surfaces near the beam path, strong ambient light, contamination on the lens, or unstable power supply.

Check alignment, clean the lenses, remove reflective objects close to the beam path, and confirm the DC power supply is stable. The DRM-0840-R's self-checking function and line synchronization help reduce false alarms in most industrial environments.

Why is my safety light curtain not detecting objects? +

If the light curtain does not detect objects, check: object size relative to the 40 mm beam spacing, alignment of emitter and receiver, and whether the object actually interrupts a beam path.

The DRM-0840-R uses 40 mm spacing, so objects smaller than about 40 mm may pass between beams without triggering. For small-object detection, choose a model with smaller pitch such as 20 mm.

Why does my safety light curtain lose detection intermittently? +

Intermittent detection loss is usually caused by loose mounting brackets, vibration drift, marginal alignment, or intermittent power supply.

For the DRM-0840-R, retighten the mounting brackets, confirm that the emitter and receiver remain parallel, and verify that the DC 10–30 V power supply is stable. On machines with strong vibration, periodic rechecking of alignment is recommended.

How do I troubleshoot a safety light curtain? +

Troubleshooting steps for the DRM-0840-R:

1) Confirm DC 10–30 V power at the emitter and receiver. 2) Check sync cable between the two units. 3) Verify alignment of emitter and receiver. 4) Inspect lenses for contamination. 5) Check the relay contact wiring and machine input. 6) Confirm no reflective object is near the beam path. 7) Verify that the safety distance is correct.

What should I check when a light curtain stops the machine unexpectedly? +

When the machine stops unexpectedly, check whether the light curtain output actually triggered, or whether the machine stopped for another reason. Verify that nothing interrupts the beams (loose material, dust, or moving machine parts).

Also confirm the relay contact wiring, machine e-stop circuit, and power supply stability. If the light curtain itself is triggering without an object in the beam path, check alignment, lens contamination, and possible optical interference from nearby equipment.
