To detect a person’s hand, a resolution of 10 mm to 20 mm is typically recommended. A 10 mm resolution provides finger-level detection, while a 20 mm resolution provides reliable hand detection. Both are considered high-safety resolutions suitable for machine guarding applications where hand protection is required.

To detect a person’s body or arm, a resolution of 40 mm is typically sufficient. The DPR-0640-NPN-NC uses a 40 mm optical axis pitch with 6 beams, providing a 200 mm protection height suitable for body and arm detection in machine access and area-sensing applications.

The DAPPRA DPR Series supports a detection distance of 0.2–3 m. If you need a 3 m detection distance, the DPR-0640-NPN-NC or other models in the DPR Series can be used, provided the beam quantity, optical axis pitch and protection height match your application. Always verify the actual installation distance falls within the specified 0.2–3 m range.

The DPR-0640-NPN-NC provides an NPN transistor output with Normally Closed (NC) signal logic. During normal beam transmission, the output is 0V; when a beam is interrupted, the output is removed. This output can be connected to compatible PLC and control-system inputs.

For safety-related applications, a safety relay or safety controller is typically required to provide the redundant output monitoring and machine-stop function needed to meet the required safety level. The DPR-0640-NPN-NC is supported by SIL 2 certification according to IEC 61508, and the appropriate safety integration should be determined by the machine risk assessment.
