FAQ

Common questions about Area Sensor technology, DPB Series selection, installation and troubleshooting.

What is an Area Sensor? +

An Area Sensor is a multi-beam photoelectric detection device that uses parallel infrared beams between an emitter and a receiver to detect objects, personnel or access conditions across a defined detection area.

The DAPPRA DPB Series is a front ultra-thin area sensor line. The DPB-0420-NPN-NC uses 4 beams at 20 mm pitch, providing a 60 mm protection height for compact machines and space-constrained automation equipment.

Are Safety Light Curtain and Area Sensor the same? +

Not exactly. In industrial automation, Safety Light Curtain and Area Sensor are often used loosely for similar multi-beam photoelectric products, but they may refer to different technical and safety requirements.

A Safety Light Curtain is typically associated with machine protection and functional safety standards. An Area Sensor is generally used for object detection, personnel detection, access monitoring and machine processes. The DPB-0420-NPN-NC is positioned as a front ultra-thin Industrial Area Sensor and Safety Light Curtain that combines both roles depending on the application.

What is the difference between a light curtain and a photoelectric sensor? +

A photoelectric sensor usually provides single-point or single-beam detection, such as a photoelectric switch or diffuse reflective sensor. A light curtain or area sensor uses multiple parallel beams to create a detection field for wider coverage.

The DPB-0420-NPN-NC uses 4 parallel infrared beams, so it can detect multiple positions, small parts or access conditions across a defined area rather than a single point.

How many beams should I choose for an area sensor? +

The number of beams depends on the required detection height and the size of the objects or personnel to be detected. More beams provide higher resolution over the same height.

The DPB-0420-NPN-NC uses 4 beams with a 20 mm pitch, providing a 60 mm protection height. For larger openings or finer detection needs, other DPB Series models with more beams and different pitches can be selected.

What beam spacing or resolution should I choose? +

Beam spacing determines the smallest object that can be reliably detected. Smaller spacing (such as 10 mm or 20 mm) provides higher resolution for small parts, hand detection or precise positioning. Larger spacing (such as 30 mm or 40 mm) is suitable for body detection or large-object presence checks.

The DPB-0420-NPN-NC uses a 20 mm optical-axis pitch, which balances resolution and cost for compact machine protection and object detection applications.

Can an area sensor be used on a conveyor belt? +

Yes. Area sensors are commonly used on conveyor belts for object detection, position confirmation, missing-part detection and counting. The multiple beams allow the sensor to detect different product heights and positions across the conveyor width.

The DPB-0420-NPN-NC's 4-beam detection field and 0.1–3 m detection distance make it suitable for conveyor monitoring where compact mounting space is limited.

Can an area sensor be used for object counting? +

Yes. When connected to a PLC or counter, the DPB-0420-NPN-NC can be used to count objects passing through the detection field. The NPN NC output provides a signal to the controller each time a beam is interrupted.

For reliable counting, the object must fully interrupt at least one beam, and the PLC scan time and sensor response time (≤5 ms) should be considered for high-speed lines.

Can an area sensor detect objects with different heights? +

Yes. Because an area sensor uses multiple beams at different heights, it can detect objects that are tall, short or at different positions within the detection field.

The DPB-0420-NPN-NC uses 4 beams spaced at 20 mm, covering a 60 mm protection height, so objects within that range can be detected depending on their size and position relative to the beams.

Can an area sensor be connected to a PLC? +

Yes. The DPB-0420-NPN-NC provides an NPN output that can be connected to a compatible PLC or machine controller. The output logic is Normally Closed (NC).

Before wiring, confirm the PLC input type (NPN / PNP), input voltage and whether the control circuit expects a sinking or sourcing signal. If the PLC uses PNP inputs, choose a PNP output version of the DPB Series instead.

How do I connect an NPN area sensor to a PLC? +

Connect the sensor output to a PLC input that supports NPN (sinking) signals. The sensor output switches the negative side, so the PLC common terminal usually connects to the positive supply.

The DPB-0420-NPN-NC operates on DC24V ±20%. Verify the PLC input voltage, input type and terminal layout before wiring, and follow the DPB Series NPN wiring diagram.

Why is my area sensor giving false detection? +

False detection is usually caused by optical interference, misalignment, reflective surfaces, strong ambient light, contamination on the lens, or unstable power supply.

Check that the emitter and receiver are properly aligned, that the lenses are clean, that no reflective object is near the beam path, and that the DC24V supply is stable. Reducing background reflection and optical interference usually solves most false detection issues.

Why is my area sensor detection unstable? +

Unstable detection can result from vibration, loose mounting brackets, partial beam blockage, weak power supply, or nearby high-power equipment causing electrical noise.

Ensure the DPB-0420-NPN-NC is securely mounted with the top and bottom brackets, that the emitter and receiver remain parallel, and that the DC24V supply and signal wiring are stable and separated from high-voltage cables.

Which sensor should I use for people detection on a conveyor? +

For people detection on a conveyor, a multi-beam area sensor or safety light curtain is usually preferred over a single photoelectric sensor because it covers a wider detection height and reduces the risk of missed detection.

The DPB-0420-NPN-NC provides a 60 mm protection height with 4 beams at 20 mm pitch, suitable for compact conveyor applications. For larger personnel detection areas, select a DPB Series model with a higher beam count and greater protection height.

Which sensor should I use for machine access protection? +

Machine access protection typically requires a Safety Light Curtain or Area Sensor with appropriate resolution and response time for the risk assessment. The required protection height, detection capability and safety distance depend on the machine opening and stopping performance.

The DPB-0420-NPN-NC is suitable for compact access points and small machine openings where a 60 mm protection height is sufficient. For larger openings or higher safety requirements, select another DPB or DPF Series model and confirm the configuration with a qualified safety engineer.
