FAQ

Common questions about safety light curtain working principle, protection height selection, installation and troubleshooting.

How does a safety light curtain work? +

A safety light curtain uses an EMITTER and a RECEIVER. The emitter produces multiple parallel infrared beams, and the receiver monitors them continuously.

When an object or person interrupts one or more beams, the receiver detects the change and switches its output signal, which can stop the machine or trigger a control action. The DPB-1220-NPN-NC uses 12 beams at 20 mm pitch, providing a 220 mm protection height with a ≤5 ms response time.

When should I use a safety light curtain instead of an area sensor? +

Choose a safety light curtain when the application involves machine protection and requires functional safety considerations, such as press machines, shearing machines and hazardous machine openings. In these cases, safety distance, resolution and response time must be evaluated against applicable standards.

Choose an area sensor for general detection of objects, personnel presence, access monitoring and machine processes where functional safety is not the primary requirement. The DPB-1220-NPN-NC can serve both roles depending on the risk assessment and integration.

What protection height do I need for my machine opening? +

The protection height should cover the entire machine opening or hazardous zone where any part of the body could enter. It is common to select a protection height equal to or slightly greater than the opening height.

The DPB-1220-NPN-NC provides a 220 mm protection height with a total height of 285 mm, suitable for medium openings on compact machines. For larger openings, select a DPB Series model with more beams and greater protection height.

My machine opening is 380 mm. Which safety light curtain should I choose? +

For a 380 mm machine opening, choose a safety light curtain with a protection height that covers the full opening plus any additional hazard area. The DPB-1220-NPN-NC at 220 mm is not sufficient by itself for a 380 mm opening.

You would need a model with a higher beam count and protection height, such as another DPB or DPF Series model that covers 380 mm or more. The correct model also depends on resolution, safety distance and controller selection. Contact DAPPRA for model selection assistance.

I need a 20 mm resolution safety light curtain. Which model should I choose? +

A 20 mm resolution light curtain is commonly used for hand detection and access protection where finer detection capability is needed. The required beam count depends on the protection height you need.

The DPB-1220-NPN-NC uses a 20 mm optical-axis pitch with 12 beams, giving a 220 mm protection height. For a taller protection height at the same 20 mm pitch, select a DPB Series model with more beams. For press machine protection, the DPF Series with controller-based output may be more suitable.

How do I select the right light curtain based on machine dimensions? +

Start with three key measurements: the machine opening height (to determine protection height), the detection distance between emitter and receiver, and the smallest object or body part that must be detected (to determine beam pitch and resolution).

Then consider response time, safety distance, output type (NPN / PNP), and mounting space. The DPB-1220-NPN-NC is a front ultra-thin model, ideal when installation space is limited. Send your machine dimensions to DAPPRA for a recommendation.

Can a safety light curtain protect operators from a machine hazard? +

Yes. When correctly selected, installed and integrated, a safety light curtain can detect an operator entering the hazardous zone and send a stop signal to the machine before contact occurs. The protection depends on correct safety distance, resolution, response time and machine stopping performance.

The DPB-1220-NPN-NC provides fast ≤5 ms response with a 220 mm protection height, suitable for medium machine openings. The final safety configuration should be determined by a qualified person based on the machine risk assessment.

Can an area sensor be used for material handling? +

Yes. Area sensors are widely used in material handling for detecting pallets, boxes, trays or parts moving through a transfer point, checking presence before gripping, or confirming that a load has cleared a zone.

The DPB-1220-NPN-NC's 12-beam detection field and 0.1–3 m detection distance make it suitable for material handling applications where multiple positions or heights need to be monitored simultaneously.

Can an area sensor be used for detecting missing products? +

Yes. Missing-product detection is one of the most common area sensor applications. When a product is present, it blocks one or more beams; when it is missing, the beams remain unblocked and the PLC detects the condition.

The DPB-1220-NPN-NC with 12 beams at 20 mm pitch can detect missing products of different sizes and positions within the 220 mm detection field, as long as the product height interrupts at least one beam.

Does a safety light curtain require a safety relay? +

It depends on the safety architecture and the machine risk assessment. In many machine protection applications, a safety relay or safety controller is used between the light curtain and the machine contactors to provide dual-channel monitoring, self-checking and safe stop functions.

The DPB-1220-NPN-NC provides an NPN NC output that can be connected directly to a PLC or controller. For higher safety integrity applications, integrating a dedicated safety relay or safety PLC is recommended. Contact DAPPRA to discuss the specific control architecture.

How do I install and align a safety light curtain? +

Install the emitter and receiver on rigid brackets at both ends of the housing, keeping them parallel and facing each other. Confirm that the housing cross section (14.5 × 28 mm for the DPB-1220-NPN-NC) fits the mounting space and that cables are routed away from high-voltage lines.

Power on the sensor and observe the alignment indicator. Adjust the position of one or both units until all beams are detected without interruption. After alignment, tighten all mounting screws and recheck the output status.

How do I align the emitter and receiver of a light curtain? +

Loosen the mounting brackets slightly so the units can be adjusted, then align the emitter and receiver so their optical axes are parallel and directly facing each other. Check the alignment indicator on the receiver or output signal to confirm all beams are received.

Adjust in both horizontal and vertical directions. Once all beams are aligned and stable, tighten the brackets firmly. The DPB Series uses line synchronization, so the emitter and receiver must be correctly aligned before the output becomes stable.

Why is my safety light curtain always triggered? +

If the output stays in the triggered state, the most likely causes are misalignment, obstruction in the beam path, contamination on the lens, incorrect wiring of the NC output, or unstable power supply.

Check that the emitter and receiver are properly aligned, that no object interrupts the beams, that the lenses are clean, and that the DC24V supply is stable. Also verify the NPN NC output wiring and confirm the PLC or controller input polarity.

Why are the emitter and receiver not communicating? +

No communication between emitter and receiver usually indicates a power supply problem, incorrect wiring, wrong synchronization mode, or serious misalignment. Confirm that both units are powered by DC24V ±20% and that the line synchronization wires are correctly connected.

Also verify that the emitter and receiver are the matching pair from the same DPB Series set, and that the distance between them is within the 0.1–3 m detection range. If the output still fails, contact DAPPRA for support.
