NDR-480-48 FAQ

What applications are suitable for the DAPPRA NDR-480-48?

The DAPPRA NDR-480-48 (SKU: OF50) is a 480W industrial DIN rail power supply designed to provide 48V DC at up to 10A. It can be considered for compatible industrial control systems, 48V equipment, and automation installations that require a higher-power DC supply.

Can the NDR-480-48 supply a 48V load drawing 8A continuously?

An 8A load at 48V requires 384W, which is below the unit's nominal 480W rating. Continuous operation still depends on ambient temperature, installation conditions, input voltage, and any required power derating.

How much power remains available when the connected equipment consumes 350W on the NDR-480-48?

At a nominal rated output of 480W, a 350W load leaves a theoretical capacity margin of 130W. Actual system planning should also account for startup demand, temperature-related derating, and the requirements of the connected equipment.

Can the NDR-480-48 power several 48V devices from one unit?

Yes, if all devices accept the supply's output voltage and their combined load remains within the available current and power limits. Check the total steady-state current, startup requirements, and the suitability of the distribution wiring.

What is the advantage of choosing 48V instead of 24V for a comparable power load?

For the same power, a 48V system generally requires less current than a 24V system. This can reduce current-related cable losses and help with power distribution, although equipment voltage compatibility and applicable electrical safety requirements must still be considered.

Does the NDR-480-48 support active power factor correction?

Yes. The NDR-480-48 includes built-in active power factor correction (PFC). The power factor is greater than 0.98 at 115VAC and greater than 0.94 at 230VAC under full load.

How efficient is the NDR-480-48?

The NDR-480-48 has a typical efficiency of 92.5%. Actual efficiency depends on input voltage and load conditions.

Can the output voltage of the NDR-480-48 be adjusted?

Yes. The front-panel +V ADJ potentiometer allows the output voltage to be adjusted from 48V to 55V DC. Ensure that any adjustment remains within the connected equipment's permitted input range.

What should be checked when sizing cables for a 10A, 48V DC output?

Cable selection should consider the continuous current, cable length, conductor size, insulation temperature rating, installation method, and allowable voltage drop. Use appropriately rated conductors and protective devices, and follow applicable electrical codes.

Does the NDR-480-48 need forced-air cooling?

No. The NDR-480-48 uses fanless natural-convection cooling. Allow sufficient airflow around the metal housing and follow the installation clearances and derating curve in the product documentation, especially in a densely packed control cabinet.

Can the NDR-480-48 operate in a hot industrial control cabinet?

The NDR-480-48 operates between −20°C and +70°C. Load derating is required above approximately 50°C ambient according to the derating curve.

What should I know before wiring the NDR-480-48 output terminals?

The NDR-480 terminal arrangement is different from the NDR-75, NDR-120 and NDR-240 models. For the NDR-480-48, TB2 pins 1 and 2 are positive output (+V), while pins 3 and 4 are negative output (−V). Always verify the physical terminal markings before connecting the load.

What happens if the NDR-480-48 is overloaded?

The NDR-480-48 includes overload protection rated at 105–130% of rated output power, using constant-current limiting. The unit shuts down after approximately 3 seconds, and re-powering is required to recover.

Can the NDR-480-48 replace a 48V power supply with a lower current rating?

It may be suitable if the existing system requires 48V DC and the NDR-480-48's input, output, protection, mounting, and wiring requirements are compatible. A higher current rating does not force equipment to draw more current, but the output voltage and system protection must be appropriate for the connected load.

What information should I provide when requesting a quotation for the NDR-480-48?

Provide the required 48V load current or power, input supply voltage, operating temperature, installation environment, and quantity required. If replacing an existing unit, include its model number and wiring details so DAPPRA can help check compatibility.

Safety & Compliance

NDR-480-48 Safety & Cautions

Read and follow all safety instructions before installing, wiring, maintaining or modifying the NDR-480-48 power supply.

  • Risk of electrical shock and energy hazard. All failure should be examined by a qualified technician. Do not remove the case of the power supply yourself.
  • Connecting both the primary and the secondary sides together is not allowed — risk of electric arcs and electric shock (danger to life).
  • Risk of burn hazard. Do not touch the unit in operation and shortly after disconnection.
  • Risk of fire and short circuit. The openings should be protected from foreign objects or dripping liquids.
  • The FG (Frame Ground) must be connected to PE (Protective Earth).
  • Output current and output wattage must not exceed the rated value on its specification.
  • Before commencing any installation, maintenance or modification work, disconnect the system from supply voltage. Make sure that inadvertent connection in circuit will be impossible.
  • For continued protection against risk of fire, replace only with the same type and rating of fuse.
  • The power supply is considered a component which will be installed into a final equipment. The final equipment must be re-confirmed that it still meets EMC directives.

Note: Pollution Degree 2 applies where there is only non-conductive pollution that might temporarily become conductive due to occasional condensation. Generally refers to dry, well-ventilated locations, such as control cabinets.
